The South Carolina Gamecocks are trending in the wrong direction under third-year head coach Shane Beamer, with four consecutive losses to knock them to 2-6 for the year.
Fresh off the team’s most recent 30-17 road defeat at the hands of Texas A&M, Beamer and the Gamecocks are at risk of missing a bowl game for the first time in a full season since going 4-8 in 2019 (under then head coach Will Muschamp).
Through 34 games in Columbia, Beamer sits at 17-17 (.500), with two bowl games in as many years at South Carolina.
Ahead of Saturday’s non-conference showdown against the FBS’ other Gamecocks (Jacksonville State), BetSouthCarolina.com – your source for South Carolina betting - broke down where South Carolina’s third year coach stands up vs. other recent men in his position.
Records of Most Recent Gamecocks Coaches
History Tough on Most S. Carolina Coaches
Despite a 2-6 start, Beamer stacks up well against the previous five South Carolina coaches. With the exception, of course, of the “Ol’ Ball Coach,” Steve Spurrier. It was really well before the four consecutive losses. Back in May, we looked at what we could expect from Beamer in Year 3.
South Carolina went 4-8 in Muschamp’s last two seasons. In 2020 Muschamp went 2-5 and was replaced by Mike Bobo, who went 0-3.
The last South Carolina coach to be above .500 after three seasons was Muschamp, who was 22-17 at that point, though he wound up at 28-30 and out of a job at the end of his five-year run with the program.
Other than Muschamp, no other Gamecocks coach has finished their run in Columbia with a record above .500 except for Spurrier, who went 86-49 (.637) with the program between 2005 and 2015.
For Beamer, the road to redemption begins against Rich Rodriguez and the other Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon in a contest in which oddsmakers from Caesars Sportsbook have South Carolina as a 15.5-point favorite. If sports betting ever does take hold in the state, you will want to have a Caesars South Carolina promo code to help place a wager.
From there, the Gamecocks will try to walk the tightrope towards 6-6 against Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Clemson, all at home on Nov. 18 and 25. Their road to win all three contests will be steep. ESPN Analytics gives South Carolina an 84.9 chance of beating Vandy and 55.8% beating Kentucky, but only 33% odds of knocking off the Tigers in their season finale against their Palmetto State rivals.
