Where Does South Carolina Rank Among States Interested In Wine?

Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

South Carolina isn’t well known for wines in the way that some states are. But there is certainly interest in the topic for folks in the Palmetto State.

National Drinking Wine Day is coming on Feb. 18, so we at BetSouthCaroloina.com took a break from covering efforts to legalize South Carolina sports betting and looked at which states are most interested in the old vino as a topic. We dug into Google Trends to discover the top 10 states most frequently searching for “wine” as a topic between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6, 2024. We measured search volume compared to other topics in each state and tabulated those numbers into this list of the 10 states most interested in wine.

By the way, Americans consume the largest volume of wine of any country – 34 million hectoliters in 2022, according to Statista.com research.

South Carolina Stands Out In Southeast

South Carolina tied for eighth for interest in wine, according to web searches compared to other topics, with 73 points. That was even with Massachusetts. Among states in the southeast region, only second-place Florida came in ahead of the Palmetto State. There are no South Carolina sportsbook apps but perhaps the state will follow neighbor North Carolina in adopting them soon.

Pennsylvania was the overall leader with a search volume of 89, followed by Florida (81 points), Connecticut (78) and a three-way tie for fourth among Maryland, New Jersey and Colorado, each with 75. In perhaps a surprise, noted wine-growing states California (74) and Oregon (72) only rated No. 7 and No. 10, respectively, finishing on either side of South Carolina and Massachusetts.

South Carolina Wines

Even the American Winery Guide website admits that “South Carolina wineries, regardless of their location, must contend with the state’s difficult growing conditions,” but nonetheless there are more than a dozen wineries listed in the state. They are mostly in the northern region, including Victoria Valley Vineyards in Cleveland, Wellborn Winery in Travelers Rest and Cat’s Paw Winery in Rock Hill. There are also a few coastal locales, mostly clustered in and around Myrtle Beach.

South Carolina might not enjoy a national reputation as being part of wine country, but that doesn’t stop the state’s residents from wanting to know more about the topic.
