Using data from Google Trends, StarbMag, and VinePair, BetSouthCarolina.com determined if each state preferred Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts. BetSouthCarolina.com also determined the number of Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts locations per 100,000 people and the search interest for “Starbucks near me” and “Dunkin’ Donuts near me” to create a weighted scoring system. 

Note: The search interest columns refer to how many people searched for one chain vs. the other as a topic. Ex. In South Carolina, 75% of the search volume was for Starbucks and 25% was for Dunkin'.

Starbucks Wins Coffee Debate in the Palmetto State

In South Carolina, residents tend to favor Starbucks over Dunkin’ Donuts when it comes to their coffee preference. Starbucks dominates in the Palmetto State with a weighted score of 1.63, surpassing Dunkin’ Donuts’ score of 1.065. The disparity is attributed to the Seattle-based franchise having more locations per 100,00 residents (2.51), outpacing Dunkin’ Donuts’ presence (1.88) in South Carolina.

A notable contrast in search volume also suggests a greater public interest in Starbucks over the Massachusetts-based franchise. Starbucks holds a substantial lead in search interest with a score of 75%, while Dunkin’ lags behind at 25%. Starbucks also maintains a nationwide preference, outshining Dunkin’ Donuts in popularity. Among the states, 40 favor Starbucks, while only ten show a preference for Dunkin’.
