What Car Brand Is Preferred In South Carolina?

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

Few mainstays of American life hold sway the way that automobiles have in Southern states like South Carolina over the years.

Between the region’s connection with stock car racing and the shared connection South Carolinians share over their vehicles, there’s no doubt that Palmetto State residents are passionate about their cars and trucks.

BetSouthCarolina.com took a beat from South Carolina sports betting and utilized CarLogos.org’s list of the Top 50 most popular car brands in the United States as a starting point for the research project. We then utilized Google Trends to search each car brand to see the highest level of interest of each state for the brand.

After completing the trends over the past 12 months (from July 25th, 2022, to July 25th, 2023), we were able to average out the results to get the top car brand for each state.

South Carolina Residents Go With National Favorite

South Carolina respondents went with the nation’s most popular car company (Honda) as their No. 1 car brand, joining the likes of their northerly Carolina neighbor, plus Alaska, Delaware, Louisiana, Maryland and Mississippi in doing so.

Honda took the No. 1 spot in the U.S. by beating out domestic mainstays like Dodge (five states) and Ford, which tied German automaker Audi with four states each. The rest of the national leaderboard included Mercedes-Benz, Chevrolet, Mazda, Volkswagen and Hyundai (three each).

Twelve other car companies scored the No. 1 spot in a single state, in Tesla (California), Toyota (Hawaii), Volvo (Maine), Lincoln (Nebraska), Nevada (BMW), New Jersey (Land Rover), Ohio (Kia), Rhode Island (Alfa Romero), Tennessee (Nissan), Texas (Lamborghini), Vermont (Subaru) and West Virginia (Jeep).

For South Carolinians, no car company could topple Honda, however, with the Japanese motor giant beating out a competitive field to win the award of being the Palmetto State’s favorite car brand for 2023.
